Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is unequivocally my favorite holiday. It's a day for enjoying copious amounts of delicious food, when wonderful smells waft from the kitchen, and it's also a time for the joyful (hopefully) gathering of friends and family around the holiday's centerpiece...the turkey. This year, we may not be able to be together as in the past, but we can celebrate with a few friends and/or family members (6, I believe is the magic number).

In Despicable Lies both Darcy and Danielle enjoy Thanksgiving and plan for it in their own ways. They are identical twins but not equal in their culinary skills or in the time spent on preparations for the traditional holiday meal.

Danielle... “Their first official housewarming occasion was to be Thanksgiving dinner, which Alex and Danielle were planning to cook for a few of their close friends. Danielle had carefully planned the menu and made list upon list of groceries to buy and decorations to make. She had obsessed about the holiday table settings, poring through catalogues for inspiration. Her dining room table was set a full week ahead with rustic earthenware and an assortment of gourds, fall flowers and candles. Alex teased her that they would have to dust the plates and Windex the glasses before serving the meal.

When their guests arrived Thanksgiving afternoon, the apartment smelled of a delicious mixture of turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

“This is fabulous," Sarah, Danielle's best friend and fellow dermatologist, raved as she looked at the table and the apartment with awe. “I don't even have the first clue how to go about cooking a turkey."

“Neither did I," Danielle confessed. “But I've really enjoyed making this meal, and now it's up to Alex to carve the bird." She handed him a large knife and asked him to use his best surgical skills on the turkey. When he finished, she proudly brought the turkey platter to the table amid generous applause from her guests. No one was shy, and everyone took huge second helpings of every dish."

Darcy... “The station's personnel had accepted Darcy as one of their own, and she was made to feel like a part of their television family. At Thanksgiving, she invited many of the crew and "on air" personalities to her home and served them an old-fashioned holiday dinner with all the trimmings. Mark stood proudly by her side, enjoying the meal and chatting with his colleagues."

Here is DARCY'S CORN CASSEROLE RECIPE: (I make it for my family every year)

Beat 2 eggs
Add 1 cup sour cream
1 can whole kernel canned corn (drained)
1 can creamed corn
1 stick butter, melted
1 box Jiffy corn muffin mix
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (Optional... Darcy does not add this)
1 4 oz. can green chilies (optional)

Spray a 2-quart baking dish with Pam. Bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes until a knife comes out clean and the top is lightly browned.

Happy Thanksgiving from all the characters in Despicable Lies and Second Chances and especially from me. And, a special thank you to my readers for taking the time to read my blogs and hopefully my books. I am sincerely grateful to each and every one of you. Stay well and safe and enjoy “Gobble, Gobble Day."

Until my next inspiration...ciao
